Frozen and Burst Pipe Repair in Northern Utah

When a pipe freezes or bursts, Empire Plumbing can help. We thaw frozen pipes, repair burst lines, and fix frozen hose bibs, outdoor faucets and yard hydrants for homes and businesses across Northern Utah, the Wasatch Front, the Wasatch Back and Southwest Wyoming, including Evanston, WY.

We are a woman-owned, family-run plumbing company based in Morgan, and December and January are when these calls come in. Same-day service is often available, and you get upfront pricing before any work starts.

What to Do Right Now

If a pipe has burst or water is coming through a ceiling or wall, these steps limit the damage while help is on the way.

  1. Shut off the water at the main valve. It is usually where the water line enters the house, often in a basement, crawl space or utility room. Closing it stops the flow everywhere.
  2. Stay clear of electricity. If water is near outlets, light fixtures or appliances, keep away and turn off power to that area at the breaker panel only if you can do it safely.
  3. Drain the lines. Open the cold taps to let the remaining water out of the pipes.
  4. Protect your things and take photos. Move what you can away from the water, and photograph the damage for your insurance company.
  5. Call us at (385) 381-9995.

If a pipe is frozen but has not burst yet: leave the tap it feeds open, and never use an open flame to thaw it. Heating a frozen pipe the wrong way can crack it or start a fire.

Frozen Pipe Thawing

A frozen pipe has not failed yet, and that is the best time to call. Water expands as it freezes and pushes against the pipe from the inside, and the longer a line stays frozen, the more likely it is to split.

We find where the line is frozen, thaw it safely, and check it for damage before the water goes back on. Then we look at why it froze in the first place, so it does not happen again on the next cold night.

Signs a pipe is frozen:

  • No water, or only a trickle, from one tap while the others work • A tap that worked yesterday and stopped after a hard freeze overnight
  • Frost or ice on a pipe you can see
  • A toilet that does not refill after flushing

Burst Pipe Repair

A burst pipe needs two things fast: the water stopped, and the line repaired. We repair the damaged section and test it before the water goes back on, so you are not left wondering whether it will hold.

Sometimes a burst shows up only after the ice melts. A pipe can split while frozen and stay quiet until it thaws, then start leaking inside a wall or ceiling. If you had a frozen line, it is worth having it checked even if everything looks fine.

If your pipes are older and failing in more than one place, we will tell you, and talk through whether a repipe makes more sense than patching one section at a time. We repipe in both PEX and copper.

What About the Water Damage?

We handle the plumbing. For drywall, flooring and the rest of the cleanup, we work with a restoration partner who deals directly with your insurance company, and we can connect you with them. That way the pipe gets fixed by a plumber, the damage gets handled by people who do restoration every day, and you are not stuck coordinating it all with an adjuster on your own.

Frozen Hose Bibs, Outdoor Faucets and Yard Hydrants

Outdoor faucets are often the first thing to freeze. A hose left connected over winter traps water inside the faucet, and when that water freezes, the damage can happen inside the wall where you cannot see it. Many people only find out in spring, the first time they turn the faucet on and water appears somewhere it should not. We repair and replace frozen hose bibs, outdoor faucets and yard hydrants, and we can check the ones you are worried about before the cold sets in.

What It Costs

Every frozen or burst pipe is different, so we do not guess at a number before we see it. Here is how pricing works with us:

  • Upfront pricing. You know the price before any work starts, and the price we quote is the price you pay.
  • Emergency call-out fee. Emergency visits carry a call-out fee, and we tell you what it is when you call.
  • Financing on every job. Not only the big ones.
  • Discounts. We offer senior, military and first-responder discounts.
  • 30-day labor warranty on our service work.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

The cheapest frozen pipe repair is the one you never need. We insulate vulnerable pipes and help you find the spots in your home most at risk, usually lines on exterior walls and in crawl spaces, garages and unheated rooms.

A few things every homeowner can do:

  • Disconnect garden hoses before the first hard freeze
  • Keep the heat on when you travel, even if the house is empty
  • Open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during cold snaps
  • Know where your main shutoff valve is before you need it
  • If the house is cold because your boiler has stopped, that is a different problem and one we fix too. See our boiler repair page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Frozen and Burst Pipes

  • How do I know if my pipes are frozen?

The most common sign is no water, or only a trickle, from one tap while the others work normally, usually after a hard freeze overnight. You may also see frost on an exposed pipe or a toilet that does not refill. If you notice any of these, leave the tap open and call us before the pipe has a chance to split.

  • What should I do first if a pipe bursts?

Shut off the water at the main valve, usually where the line enters the house in a basement, crawl space or utility room. Keep away from any water near electricity, open the cold taps to drain the lines, take photos for your insurance company, and call us at (385) 381-9995.

  • Can a frozen pipe thaw on its own?

Sometimes, but thawing is often when the problem shows up. A pipe can split while frozen and stay quiet until the ice melts, then start leaking inside a wall or ceiling. If you have had a frozen line, it is worth having it checked.

  • Do you handle the water damage too?

We handle the plumbing. For drywall, flooring and cleanup, we work with a restoration partner who deals directly with your insurance company, and we can connect you with them.

  • Do you repair frozen outdoor faucets and hose bibs?

Yes. We repair and replace frozen hose bibs, outdoor faucets and yard hydrants. A hose left connected over winter is one of the most common causes, so disconnect it before the first hard freeze.

  • How can I keep my pipes from freezing?

Disconnect garden hoses, keep the heat on when you travel, and open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during cold snaps. For pipes in crawl spaces, garages or exterior walls, we can insulate them and show you which lines in your home are most at risk.

  • Is there an emergency fee?

Yes, emergency visits carry a call-out fee, and we tell you what it is when you call. Like all our work, you get upfront pricing before anything starts, and financing is available on every job.

  • How quickly can someone come out?

Same-day service is often available. Timing depends on your location, the type of job and current demand.

  • Which areas do you serve?

Northern Utah, the Wasatch Front, the Wasatch Back and Southwest Wyoming, including Evanston, WY. If you are not sure whether we cover your area, give us a call.
